We invite you to an art installation – a solo exhibition of a pair of artists Štefan Oliš & Lukáš Matejka from Trenčín, who are dedicated to culture, new media art, interactivity and art in public and gallery space. The exhibition will take place at the Strange Baron (Nábrežie slobody 552/1, Púchov) is a cultural centre connected with a café, a bookshop and a terrace in the park.

The main idea of this site-specific project is a hybrid war in which Slovakia is right on the front line. First of all, it is necessary to understand what a hybrid war actually is. There are various definitions of hybrid warfare and it has taken various forms in the history of mankind. At present, the term is mainly associated with operations that provoke instability in the target countries, polarise society and cause distrust of institutions. In this way, they seek to undermine the unity and togetherness of a population that is becoming vulnerable and unwilling to actively resist threats from the outside. These operations are most closely associated with the Russian Federation, which is proving to spread a huge amount of disinformation, mainly directed at EU countries and the US. This activity has gained momentum, especially after 2014, when Russia annexed Crimea.

In this struggle, Slovakia is on the imaginary front line because of its geographical location, as it belonged to the westernmost part of the former Eastern bloc.

People here often suffer from a recollective optimism, and the polarisation is becoming more and more radical. However, there are various personalities in Slovakia, from the ranks of journalists, police officers, soldiers, but also analysts, artists and others, who are actively fighting against disinformation, opposing the practices of power, seeking the truth and trying to keep the idea of freedom and democracy alive.Through this work, the authors seek to help us become aware of what our society is currently facing, who are those who are fighting for freedom and truth in these times. They also want to draw attention to the price that they and other people on both sides of the barricade are essentially paying for it.Often times this line divides families, partners, cripples institutions, shatters dreams.

Admission: voluntary during the opening hours of the Strange Baron Café / out of hours 3€ / person

The event is publicly supported by the Fund for the Support of the Arts.

The Strange Author, Štefan Oliš, is exhibiting in the attic space of the County House. This exhibition is a selection of his strange work, conducted in a rather mysterious and dark spirit. It is a collection of works from different periods of the author’s career, united by a conceptual line, a search for the meaning of life, reflections on death and various borderline situations.

The exhibition is dominated by a fascinating interactive installation, where the viewer has the opportunity to influence the course of direct decisions in a suicidal narrative that resembles a computer game or various live discussions. Furthermore, the site also features an immersive sound installation where the viewer can experiment with different sounds and movements. The digital part of the exhibition is contributed by the video installation with interaction Gepark, which was created in collaboration with Lukáš Matejko. In addition, traditional art forms such as painting and graphics, or batik, are also presented.

The main focus of the artist Štefan Oliš, who currently works as a teacher at the School of Art Industry in Trenčín, is to draw attention to the themes of violence, criminality and social problems. He works with video art, interactive installations, sound installations, art performances, objects, as well as painting and graphics. Through his diverse body of work, he often seeks to sarcastically and ironically encourage viewers to reflect on human life, its value, meaning and interpersonal relationships, as well as the decadence of society and critique of the contemporary system.

In addition to his artistic activities, he is active in the TRAKT civic association, of which he is also the founder. He participates in cultural events, exhibitions, festivals, events. He organizes cultural activities in the field of contemporary trends in visual arts.

His other activities are mainly dominated by video production, which is often intertwined with the commercial aspect. In addition, he is also involved in advertising work, focusing on unusual elements and projections that often straddle the line between artwork and advertising.

The exhibition is open to the public on 8, 17 and 25 November 2023 from 17:00 to 20:00. The event is supported by the Fund for the Support of the Arts from public funds.

On Monday, 3 July 2023, the Považské Museum inaugurated a part of the interactive exhibition at Strečno Castle. The new exposition, in which TRAKT, among others, participated, is divided into two parts. The first is dedicated to the owners and administrators of the castle, the second is focused on the military history of the castle. “Right at the beginning, visitors will be greeted by an important personality connected with Strečno Castle – Žofia Bosniaková, who will tell about the life and fate of the castle owners, its administrators and personalities connected with life at Strečno Castle from its very beginnings through a video story. The atmosphere will be accentuated by a moving large-screen projection, which will complement the narrated story. Both young and old visitors will be entertained by the shadow play, where the main role will be played by soldiers. Fun will also be provided at the selfie wall, where they can enjoy, for example, a costume mirror. For those who want to learn more, there is an info kiosk with a touchscreen encyclopaedia in the exhibition, with more detailed information about the history of the castle, the owners and administrators of the castle and military history,” explained the co-author of the script Mgr. Andrea Slaná, PhD. Part of the new exhibition is accessible to visitors as part of the guided tour. Strečno Castle is open every day from 9.00 to 18.00 with the last entrance at 17.00.

Society benefits and develops forward when there is mutual trust between people. All the more so when trust grows. It goes hand in hand. Until when? Until the moment when the erroneous realisation came that it was enough to weaken trust in every single way, gently and subtly over time. Individuals/people/groups/communities/nations stop trusting each other based on tiny disinfo-pulses. Gradually, the emerging distrust gnaws at the bones of everything. And it is from this mistrust that individuals are currently benefiting and profiting at the expense of the growth of society as a whole. “You don’t trust science, you don’t get vaccinated. You don’t trust finance, you diversify into cryptocurrencies. You don’t believe in the media, you run to conspiracy media. You don’t believe in democracy, you admire authoritarian regimes and populists.” The crisis of confidence is a major ideological starting point.

The main activities of the project are the research and decomposition of phenomena and themes that undermine trust. A collection of 5 large-format original paintings by artist Lukáš Matejka – portraits (160 x 100 cm) will be created. The portraits are based on real people – representatives of the church, finance, judiciary, police and medicine. An important skeleton of the emerging works is also the work with audio – interviews – monologues – the destruction of voices of trust/distrust. The author creates an acoustic collage with people who. who have lost or are losing trust. An equal part of the exhibited paintings will be this created sound environment (recordings, editing, post-processing). The viewer – visitor of the newly emerging FORMAAT Gallery in Trencin will thus find himself in a gallery with a complex authorial painting-acoustic collection Crisis of Trust, which will affect him visually and acoustically.

The aim and contribution of the project is to realize a visual reflection/authorial exhibition referring to the growing tendency of mistrust in society, which impacts directly or indirectly on each of us. The target audience of the exhibition is mainly the general public, students and the professional – artistic community.

TRAKT will participate in the 5th edition of the Beast Film Festival in Porto (Portugal) with a video art exhibition under the curatorial direction of Štefan Oliš. The section is composed of a selection of videos from the Videoart match project to which it is loosely related. Štefan Oliš, a contemporary artist and educator from Slovakia, will present videos by students from different V4 countries. He will introduce the audience in Porto to the variety and diversity of video art – the play with video, sound and animation. Defining beauty in motion, movement in time, capturing the world around them as they perceive it. Video art is the impetus for everything and the artist is its image.

The eighth year of the summer workshop Park CAMP focuses on participatory and interactive art, art in the public space of the city park in Trebišov (in cooperation with the Koniareň gallery – space for contemporary art – koniarengallery.com). The aim of the event is to create a professional-educational space for students, graduates and teachers at art colleges in Slovakia and abroad. The aim of the project is gaining new knowledge and experience in the field of contemporary art, intermedia art and interdisciplinary overlaps. The project which was created for the city park in Trebišov and the KONIAREŇ cultural space focuses on the interaction with the spectator via social interventions within natural environment of the park where participants can, aside from participatory an interactive art, work with site-specific art, performance, sound art, public art, conceptual art and new media-technologies art strategies. Apart from the theoretical phase of the workshop, participants can be a part of the practical phase where they can create visual and acoustic arts – interventions into the natural environment of the park, together with professional lecturers (Miroslav Nicz and Peter Valiska-Timečko). The goal is to create such works of art, with which participants will try out the work right on the field in confrontation with the audience. The intention is to react to the specific park environment (site-specific art) or to thematically respond to the direct relationship between the city and natural environment (public – private, natural vs. technological, online – offline).

The space is situated on the premises of a manor house in one of the biggest forest parks in the Central Europe.

Gardens, fountains, a pond and other natural landmarks are part of the park. There, the visitors can find the Mausoleum of Count Július Andrássy, an amphitheater, the Parič castle ruins, wine cellars, a French garden and various recreational zones.
Did you hear from the elders about the amazing atmosphere of keying in 89’s? Or have you been yanking yourself? In the work of Pavel Soukal and Lukáš Matejka, you can take out the keys again and experience some of these extraordinary events. But you can’t do it alone, you’ll have to connect with other people. Exactly as in November 89. Your joint rumble will begin an interactive visual demolition of the wall projected in your city. The reward for visual demolition efforts will be to reveal unique photographs from the Velvet Revolution. Who knows, maybe you meet your parents there, or yourself thirty years ago.

The civic association TRAKT together with the Férová O2 Foundation and the Trnava Self-Governing Region prepared an audiovisual installation that will travel together with the exhibition to mark the 30th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution. Overall, the exhibition will be in seven cities within Trnava region.

Authors: Mgr.art. Pavol Soukal art. Lukáš Matejka
Producer: Patrik Kubizna
The work was created with the support of the Férová O2 Foundation and the Trnava Self-Governing Region.

How do the authors perceive November 89?

As creative artists and contemporary artists, we perceive the events of November 89 as a fusion of an active society that wanted to make a difference for all of us. This change was only possible because we, as a company, were able to connect, we were a collective hero who could not be broken on our way to freedom. Today, our society is polarized by various themes – groups – communities that often divide us out of mind. We want to show our interactive work how active and connecting people are today.

Place and dates of implementation:

Sereď, at the Town Hall – 6. 11. 2019

Senica – 8. 11. 2019

Galanta, at the Municipal Office – November 15, 2019

Trnava, Courtyard – 17. 11. 2019

Piešťany – 18 November 2019

Skalica – Nov 19, 2019

Hlohovec, Cinema Smile – 20. 11. 2019

Symbolism in the work:

Demolishing a wall that reveals photos. – The symbol of an imaginary wall that surrounded our country and prevented us from seeing the truth, not only here but also abroad. The falling wall symbolizes the fall mode.

The revelation of the period photography symbolizes the revelation of truth, hope, freedom, human authenticity.

Each viewer can only tear down part of the wall, but only together they collapse the whole wall. A symbol of social change and the importance of joining for the benefit of all of us. Although I can change a small part myself, I need active people around me to change the whole.

The keys trigger the wall to fall. The keyhole has become a symbol of the Velvet Revolution, this link will allow us to illustrate the atmosphere of the moments displayed in the photographs.

“Freedom is not self-evident” – the motto complementing this work shows that the struggle for freedom never ends and never ends. Only by our activity and interest in public affairs will we guard our freedom.

Interactive experiential educational event at the Regional Cultural Center in Prievidza, focused on the life and activities of Milan Rastislav Štefánik. The aim is to bring one of the most important personalities of our history closer to pupils and students. How? In an unconventional – experiential way, through their own activities. The area of augmented reality was covered by Lukáš Matejka (TRAKT) and Peter Marcinov.

Augmented reality on a smartphone or tablet will reveal to children and visitors to the exhibition about MR Štefánik areas and topics such as astronomy, aviation, politics – rhetoric, communication, military science – World War I, its course, Stefanik’s participation in it, travel – getting to know countries etc.
