The village of Čierny Balog is located in the heart of Veporské vrchy, about 4 km south of Brezno. It consists of 13 settlements, situated along the Black Hron River and in the adjacent valleys surrounded by thick forests. The river forms the axis and continues northwest to Hron, where it flows into Hrona. From Hronca to Dobroč river, the narrow gauge of Černohronská železnice is bordered, which at the time of its greatest boom reached almost 132 km.
