In 2019 the Festival of Light and Shadow is expanding from the public space of Banská Bystrica to “Little Rome” to Trnava. In Trnava’s environment, the project will not offer viewers a superficial superficial lighting “show”, but will present contemporary visual and lighting art in the public space of the historical center.

Young art projects will sensitively open the theme of the union in their wide cultural and social spectrum by their ideological legacy. Projects will focus on networking, collaboration (multi-generation, multi-genre, cross-species), networking, networking, connectivity and finding new ways. The festival’s priority is to provide space for young, un-established artists from Slovakia and the European environment. The festival wants to be the engine at the start of their professional artistic career. We want to inspire, educate and entertain the general public. We promise to the public, viewers and visitors truly unusual experiences. When? 20 September 2019 after dark.

DUST is a Virtual Reality piece which invites the audience to experience dance performance from the perspective of eternal particle travelling in space. DUST aims to transform the way people see and experience contemporary dance through a 4 minute long immersive virtual reality experience. It explores the boundaries between the virtual and the real-world experiences and advances research in the fields of participatory performance, human-computer interaction and VR technologies. In DUST, the audience uses a Virtual Reality (VR) headset to place themselves in the immediate presence of the dancer and within a unique visual and aural scenario which has been created by capturing volumetric recordings of dancers and photogrammetric imagery of Rambert’s building. The resulting effect is exhilarating, allowing the audience to experience the work from different perspectives and within the space where the dance is happening. DUST creates an emotional connection between the audience and the dancers, and between the audience and the digitally reconstructed architecture. It is dance as no audience member has ever experienced before. The project is a demonstration of what dance, performance, film and sound could become in the future of VR.

The piece is inspired by how almost every element on Earth was formed at the heart of a stardust, including our bodies. Drawing inspiration from these eternal particles which were part of our bodies for an incredibly short moment, as well as the motif of the unthinkable world expressed by the philosophy book In the Dust Of This Planet by Eugene Thacker, DUST seeks to reimagine our perception of body, space and time with the use of digital technologies. It merges real and virtual worlds to produce new environments where physical and digital co-exist and interact in real time. More specifically, it combines the live stream with volumetric capturing of dance and virtual environment and in doing so, immerses the viewers visually, as well as physically and emotionally. DUST seeks to explore innovative forms of engaging the audience and ways of building new narratives through the creative partnership of performing arts and new media.

Mária Júdová and Andrej Boleslavský, artist duo, have been exploring the creative potential of technology for over a decade. Their work combines the exploration of technologically informed dance practices with participatory performances, body movement, time and space. Mária and Andrej are interested in combining choreographic thinking and the practice of digital art creation to deliver richer and more meaningful experiences. They often find themselves working in close collaboration with performers, dancers and choreographers with the aim of trying to understand the principles behind the creation of the movement.

Camouflage is a virtual reality and dance installation. It gives its participants a playful immersive experience of the game of hide and seek and its viewer the opportunity to watch a match played out live as well as virtually between hunter and prey. In this exciting new work, VR is used to create a new social game that plays on our instincts and opens up room for fun and sinister interpretation.

Camouflage is an immersive art project, an experimental mixed reality game for multiple players which playfully explores disparity of perception within the real and the digital space. The project is inspired by an old game known to many ancient cultures where a blindfolded player is trying to find its opponents. When successful, the roles switch.

In Camouflage, two audience members are blindfolded by the VR headsets through which they can only see an abstract representation of their surroundings, and simulated bodies in motion. The goal of the players inside the virtual reality experience is to identify which of the abstracts objects actually belong to a real person.

Outside the VR experience, there are four other people who have sensors attached to their bodies and move in the given space, trying to stay out of sight as long as possible: camouflage. The goal of the players outside of the virtual world is to stay unnoticed for as long as possible. To do this, they need to mimic the movement quality of the animation and blend with the environment. To make the experience even more engaging, we will create complex, automated rules, scoring system, as well as a system of handicaps that will change over the course of the game.

It is particularly interesting to observe the players and the emergence of tactics and strategies. The success of the player is influenced by his or her knowledge of the opponent, ability to empathize, predict actions and estimate skills in order to provoke reactions. Ultimately, Camouflage is a playful interactive installation for the wider public, a multi-user experience looking at how the VR experience can impact our senses and make us connect with our instincts. How do we assume the roles of the predator or the prey?
