Re:index is an intermedia project at the crossroads between sound and object installations linked with contemporary dance, fine arts, intervention into the public space and institutional criticism, IT and an interactive game for the spectator.

It processes the phenomenon of the virtually perceived world – the real one, by using interactive storytelling, comprehending the ideology of the place through the language of contemporary art, semiotics and social paradigms. The project uncovers motives of a perceiving individual subject – as a mythical entity in a collective situation, and dramatically re/constructs possible and expectable situations on which it uncovers local social-historical relations of the place as well as current and speculative conditions of the existence of the non/place, modern rituals and infra/structures, in which the subject finds itself at the given moment.

Simply said, it is a paraphrase of a computer game, an open world story, where the spectator becomes the player in the real world, the structure and universal significance of which he/she process through a filter of current artistic and cultural considerations offering it to new experiences, movement, discovery of new senses, reflections and connectivity of networks around us. The project is focused on an expert or an amateur spectator, children, students or teachers. The aim is to create and introduce an interdisciplinary play, as a universally transferable and complete installation lasting several hours that highlights the interaction between the spectator and the environment (passive as well as active).

The premiere of the project:

07/05/2021 | Friday | 12:00 – 21:00 | Trenčín | surroundings of the Miloš Alexander Bazovský Gallery, Palackého 27

+ online stream at www.trakt.sk/re-index

The combination of the word “tasting” and the letter “V” in the title of the exhibition is intended to indicate that it is a wine tasting on which the entire work of Lukáš Matejka and Štefan Oliš is based. The work itself consists of happening – classic wine tasting. The work responds directly to the functioning of openings and similar events – to elitism in art. Why do people go to the opening? The vernissage is the grand opening of the exhibition, which is usually associated with an art program and refreshments. In these circumstances, people hear the opening speech. Then they are happy to engage in discussions with friends and refreshments already mentioned… The exhibition itself and art often fall into the background. So why wouldn’t wine tasting alone be art?

November 19, 2019, 17:00, M. A. Bazovský Gallery, Trenčín

“Tasting V” consists of a short event, a classic wine tasting in the gallery space. It is a public evaluation of wine made available to the general public. Appropriation or appropriation of the event – wine tasting as an artistic activity. The staged event reconstructs real, live tasting in real time and space and in direct interaction with visitors to the Trenčín M. A. Bazovský Gallery.

It combines concentration, balance and harmony during exercising on the special Gepark logs. Slovak music producer Jarduuzzu added a music background, which inspired participants to great performance. The highlight was dancing improvization on Gepark logs by dancers from Human Art Space.

The connection of the word „ochutnávka“ („taste“) and letter „V“ in the title of the exhibition suggest wine tasting, to which is all concept based. Classic wine tasting become art peace. Also work react very strightly on process of openings of art shows and elitism in the art.

Why do people go to the opening? Vernisage means festive opening of the exhibition. The word is associated with art show and refection. Visitors hear curator speach, they discuss between each other with pleasure and then they observe refection. The exhibition and art falls into the background. Why tasting of wines could not be art itself?

„Ochutnávka V“ is based on short event. Classic wine tasting – wine evaluation opened for public. Event is appropriated by degustation – wine tasting as artistic activity. Staged occasion reconstructed live tasting in real time and space, in direct interaction with visitors. Happening „Ochutnávka“ become opportunity for discussion, improvisation and unpredictable. It is up to the spectator himself how to judge the work which escape all conventions of galleries.

The art show is critique of elitism in art. Simultaneously it is reflection of society focused on shallow values. The whole event will run as general wine tasting event – tasters and visitors become part of the work. They will taste five tastes of wine. We are focused on laymans. Taste of wine will be the most expected sensorial atribute. Layman , in contrast with Professional wine taster, may just state „ I like“ or „ I do not like“ at the moment.

Record of the happening will screen documentation of evening for spectators in future visit. Everything what was part of happening should remain in place as visitors – tasters left. But hard – working cleaners of Nitra Gallery took care of opposite.

There is a path that precedes the creation of a single art. Mostly, this process is called formation or creation process. It is an activity of artists, creators, reaching some goal. The result is an art as such, in any form or format. The process of creation is an integral part of the work. Despite of this fact the concept of this exhibition called “The process” aims to separate the process of creating of the output.

The reason for this separation is simple – to draw attention to process creation, the artist’s path to the goal. Artworks attention is attaching to automatically and continuously, the process of creation is often somewhere in the background, or is mediated only through a kind of story of the work. Therefore it draws attention primarily to control the outcome. Many times the way of creation of the art is as least fascinating as the work itself and in some cases it is even way more important than the work, the outcome itself. Visual artist love his work, his path, process of creation, drafting ideas. For the artist, the creating process is very important.

The concept of the exhibition focuses on the process of formation and attention refers to the process of creation. The exhibition was composed of photos, videos, objects, artifacts, notes. It is a form of documentation as appealing as some form. Selection is trying to take the viewer visually and content. Mostly, the documentation was remained in the background, unknown for the audience, remains forever only in the form of legends. Another aspect involved in the process is the rawness of the record. As the attention relates primarily to the result of the art, the creation process is being rarely documented. If yes, it is usually very authentic without any further effects interference and very authentic.
The exhibition called “in process” offers a different perspective to the way of creating art and it tries to be separated from the authentic video performance record.

PERFORM ACTION – Minifest of the Action art and performances in Banská Bystrica (Slovak National Uprising Square and Cinema “Star”) happened on May 19th, 2010. Students of the Department of Intermedia and Digital Media – FFA – Academy of Arts participated on this project. We could put this event under a certain form of happening when one day the streets literally were dominated by students from FFA in Banská Bystrica. Their actions disrupted the stereotype of a typical day in the town. There were produced many performances, very good at quality, which solved current issues and deeper topics too. They weren’t mean like the first shocked action, but most works had quite deep sophisticated concept. Nevertheless, messages could be relatively easy to identify, which certainly appreciated the audience in a public space thus residents of the city.
