We invite you to an art installation – a solo exhibition of a pair of artists Štefan Oliš & Lukáš Matejka from Trenčín, who are dedicated to culture, new media art, interactivity and art in public and gallery space. The exhibition will take place at the Strange Baron (Nábrežie slobody 552/1, Púchov) is a cultural centre connected with a café, a bookshop and a terrace in the park.

The main idea of this site-specific project is a hybrid war in which Slovakia is right on the front line. First of all, it is necessary to understand what a hybrid war actually is. There are various definitions of hybrid warfare and it has taken various forms in the history of mankind. At present, the term is mainly associated with operations that provoke instability in the target countries, polarise society and cause distrust of institutions. In this way, they seek to undermine the unity and togetherness of a population that is becoming vulnerable and unwilling to actively resist threats from the outside. These operations are most closely associated with the Russian Federation, which is proving to spread a huge amount of disinformation, mainly directed at EU countries and the US. This activity has gained momentum, especially after 2014, when Russia annexed Crimea.

In this struggle, Slovakia is on the imaginary front line because of its geographical location, as it belonged to the westernmost part of the former Eastern bloc.

People here often suffer from a recollective optimism, and the polarisation is becoming more and more radical. However, there are various personalities in Slovakia, from the ranks of journalists, police officers, soldiers, but also analysts, artists and others, who are actively fighting against disinformation, opposing the practices of power, seeking the truth and trying to keep the idea of freedom and democracy alive.Through this work, the authors seek to help us become aware of what our society is currently facing, who are those who are fighting for freedom and truth in these times. They also want to draw attention to the price that they and other people on both sides of the barricade are essentially paying for it.Often times this line divides families, partners, cripples institutions, shatters dreams.

Admission: voluntary during the opening hours of the Strange Baron Café / out of hours 3€ / person

The event is publicly supported by the Fund for the Support of the Arts.

The international project Park CAMP 9 creates space and suitable conditions for students, recent graduates and teachers of art colleges in Slovakia and abroad to improve and progress in the field of contemporary art – intermedia and interdisciplinary overlaps in the form of educational activities – workshops. The final output of the wokshops are visual works – interventions created for the specific environment of the city park in Trebišov (site-specific art) and the final exhibition focused this year on interactive art forms, in the environment of the park, where the participants work with the strategies of site-specific art, performance, public art, conceptual art and art of new media – technology.

The exhibition featured Lukáš Matejka / TRAKT (tech. collaboration Alžbeta Bobulová), with the work Home X. Home – Time – Humanity – Technology – Space. Using digital video mapping, the author contrasts the dwelling of the past (the ruins of Parič Castle) and the possible home of the future (the universe).

During the theoretical phase of the workshop, the participants improved their technical, technological and software skills while learning about current trends in the art field. During the practical phase, in cooperation with expert lecturers, they used the acquired experience directly in the field of the park. The educational laboratory provided direct experience with the realization of the work and confrontation with the viewer, where the participants gained new creative impulses, experience and knowledge in the field of contemporary visual art. The event included an accompanying activity GEO-Caching, an interactive game based on GPS coordinates designed for parents with children.

FRIDAY 26/8/2022 – FINISSAGE

18:00 Opening of the accompanying exhibition.

Hiding dance is a new site-specific concept from TRAKT, which consists of dance performances (contemporary dance and performance) in unconventional places in Trenčín and its periphery. As part of the field artistic research, we chose exteriors – slightly on the urban periphery, at the same time in easy spectator accessibility. With reference to the strong specificity of the places and the distinctive principle of genius loci. The project is a public confrontation of the results of professional dance-performative artists and interprétés Lucia Bielik, Michaela Šeligová, Radoslav Piovarči and Ján Gonda. Hidden Dance counts on the participation of the general public – casual spectators.

Sound installation on the old railway bridge in Trencin

The sound installation Takt, set in the environment of the old railway bridge in Trenčín, is a new work of art by the TRAKT civic association. The interactive work was created together with other invited colleagues from the cultural and technological field. The work was created with the help of the ECC Trenčín 2026 team, which worked intensively on the candidacy of the city of Trenčín in this prestigious cultural event (European Capital of Culture). The sound installation was first launched to the public in a test phase at the turn of November and December 2021.

The author of the music is the young performer Toello, coming from Trenčianske Teplice, who layered 16 unique original tracks. These are triggered interactively by embedded sensors and thus react to people coming and going directly on the bridge. If one person enters the bridge the first musical layer is triggered, the next person crossing triggers the next, and so on. When the passer-by leaves the bridge, the track turns off again. If there are, for example, 10 people on the bridge at the same time, in the sensed environment directly above the river Váh, 10 sound tracks will play in parallel, which together will form a single musical unit. The maximum is 16 music tracks. At that point, passers-by will be able to hear the full track. If there is no one on the bridge, it will remain silent. Takt is available every day from 7:00 am to 4:00 pm.

The work responds to collaboration, togetherness and connectedness in a local context. For example, in the quest to become ECoC 2026, but also in the unification of the cultural and artistic community. However, it also responds to global contexts such as the polarisation of society in different areas. The sound installation presents in a rather illustrative way the idea of “unity is strength”, where only by being present with each other can people play a musical piece in its full scope. Although the individual plays an essential role, he or she cannot create the whole on his or her own.

The current unsatisfactory state of disrepair of the gallery building does not allow for the further display of originals of incalculable value. The consequence is that Fulla will leave his own gallery until a major reconstruction is carried out.

Christmas time is a magical time where anything is possible – we can even see the sounds shine through. Such an experience has been prepared for the inhabitants of Trenčín by the TRAKT association in cooperation with the city of Trenčín. A symphony of sounds will come alive in colourful lights, and everyone can be a conductor and a player, from the smallest ones. Thanks to the interactive installation, the space of the Atrium under the City Tower will be illuminated and sounded by your joint movement. You can come to play in the Atrium under the City Tower in Trencin from 22 December 2021 to 19 January 2022, always in an evening magical atmosphere between 15:00 and 20:00.

The Festival of lights and shadow in the heart of Slovakia came into existence in 2015 on the occasion of the UN declaration of that year as the International Year of lights and light-based technologies. The aim of this step is to remind people across the world of what a significant role light and optical technologies play in the everyday life and in the future development of our society.

Our festival will bring an adaptation of a subject of MEMORY into the public space of the city of Banská Bystrica with the help of contemporary artists in December 2021. Many artists work with the subject of memory, often to record something for future generations. Others prefer to disrupt the memory in unexpected ways to change the methods by which we look at the past. How does the art influence our collective memory? And how can it inform our experience about significant events of our time?

We want to do art that tells stories. Stories about personal and cultural memory. Art is open to interpretation. Memory of the past is not a clear story. It is a combination of opinions from different points of view.

WHEN: 15. – 18. 12. 2021

WHERE: public space of Banská Bystrica

The 7th of August 2021 is going to be carried out in the spirit of light projections and art installations, mostly under the theme of looking into the past of the former botanical garden that was built by writer Gustáv Kazimír Zechenter-Laskomerský right by his house.

The title “NOCTURNO” comes from the word “nocturno” which is a translation for night music or instrumental music that is played outside, as for example a serenade. The night during the NOCTURNO should also be like a song, a beautiful music of visual arts.

Artists like Arter Eniac from Kremnica, who has created a lot of graphics for the city, artists from the civic association TRAKT with their piece of work entitled Strom slov (Tree of Words) created by Lukáš Matejka and Štefan Oliš in cooperation with Alexandra Rychtarčíková and Viktor Vilkovský and a piece of work entitled Modrá planéta (Blue planet) by Štefan Oliš, artist Ivana Laila Drobná, Ové Pictures art group or a group of young architects will be presented. The programme is going to be accompanied by a lecture dedicated to the history of Zechenter garden, a Andy Switch concert or a movement performance by students of the Department of Dance Creation of the Academy of Performing Arts.

Strom slov (Tree of Words) (2021)

Lukáš Matejka (TRAKT), Štefan Oliš (TRAKT), Viktor Vilkovský and Alexandra Rychtarčíková

Site – specific digital installation entitled Strom slov reflects the history of Zechenter garden in Kremnica and, at the same time, opens up the themes of ecology, climate or history and of a relationship between people and the nature. The installation consists of sound projection on a specific branch of tree which transforms into a 3D talking head. This sexless face of an “avatar” tells a fictional story with the support of historical events which is connected to the specific place and to the specific chosen tree. A once-in-a-lifetime experience with elements of surrealistic supernatural overlap is thus created.

Modrá planéta (Blue planet) (2021)

Štefan Oliš (TRAKT)

Short, but that much powerful videoprojection is a conceptual work of art that is broadened by a certain illustrative idea of an artist. The projection is strongly focused on the current issues of climate change and its aspects. It primarily bets on the subject matter of the work of art and its main idea. The goal is to “shake” the spectator and leave them with an emotion worth thinking over.

The eighth year of the summer workshop Park CAMP focuses on participatory and interactive art, art in the public space of the city park in Trebišov (in cooperation with the Koniareň gallery – space for contemporary art – koniarengallery.com). The aim of the event is to create a professional-educational space for students, graduates and teachers at art colleges in Slovakia and abroad. The aim of the project is gaining new knowledge and experience in the field of contemporary art, intermedia art and interdisciplinary overlaps. The project which was created for the city park in Trebišov and the KONIAREŇ cultural space focuses on the interaction with the spectator via social interventions within natural environment of the park where participants can, aside from participatory an interactive art, work with site-specific art, performance, sound art, public art, conceptual art and new media-technologies art strategies. Apart from the theoretical phase of the workshop, participants can be a part of the practical phase where they can create visual and acoustic arts – interventions into the natural environment of the park, together with professional lecturers (Miroslav Nicz and Peter Valiska-Timečko). The goal is to create such works of art, with which participants will try out the work right on the field in confrontation with the audience. The intention is to react to the specific park environment (site-specific art) or to thematically respond to the direct relationship between the city and natural environment (public – private, natural vs. technological, online – offline).

Koniareň is an independent cultural space (former riding hall) located on the premises of the museum and the cultural center of south Zemplín in Trebišov. It is a connection of an art lab, a cultural institution, a community space and a group of activists. The space is situated on the premises of a manor house in one of the biggest forest parks in the Central Europe.

Gardens, fountains, a pond and other natural landmarks are part of the park. There, the visitors can find the Mausoleum of Count Július Andrássy, an amphitheater, the Parič castle ruins, wine cellars, a French garden and various recreational zones. The final exhibition in the Koniareň gallery under the theme INTER-ACTION is part of the event including a guided tour on the marked trail with visual interventions in the city park. Associate professor, a conceptual and multimedia artist and a university lecturer Miroslav Nicz with a degree in painting will be the curator and the lecturer of the event. The workshop will provide a direct experience and confrontation of the author with the public.
