The big celebration of the International Roma Day in Prague 2024 brings an inspiring theme: the Romaissance – the renaissance of the Roma. Romaissance represents a new era for the Roma community and highlights the courage and strength of Roma to overcome obstacles and thrive in the modern world.

ARA ART prepared the 10th edition and within it programs that included artistic performances, discussions on Roma culture and identity, educational workshops and much more.

During the gala program at ARCHA+, (Na Poříčí 26, Prague 1) artists such as: Antonín Gondolán, Vanesa Horáková, Tomáš Botló, Anička Oláhová, Marsell Bendig, Gitana, Bikarová sisters, Igor Kmet’o Jr., Kale, Petra Gelbart, Matiová sisters, Marta Balážová, Tessie, Janko (Duo Band Kladno), Oto Bunda, Natálie Kuchárová, Michal Žolták, Nicolas Čonka, Live Band of Milan Kroka. Moderated by Jarmila Balážová and Tomáš Bystrý. Projections by Lukáš Matejka (TRAKT).

9th International Roma Day

The festive evening of the 9th International Roma Day celebrations was once again held at the Archa Theatre in Prague together with ARA ART.

This year’s celebrations were marked by FUSION: bringing together different musical genres and artistic disciplines, bringing together performers, artists, people and presenting traditional and new art forms.

Edita & Martina Bendigová (Edit Bend group), Alžběta Ferencová (ZEA), Tommy Bela & Ricco Šarkozi, Natalia Udovikova,Tatiana Voronina, Aleco Ivanovitch, Dominik Teleky & Lenka Fučíková, Josef Reis & Majka Ondičová, Simona Šenkiová, Milan Kroka & Aneta Surmajová, Marie Oláhová, Jan Hron, the Bikarová sisters & the Matiová sisters, Michal Žolták. The artists were accompanied by the Live Band of Milan Kroka and moderators Sabina Šlachtová and Nikolas Ferenc. Lukáš Matejka (TRAKT) made light projections during the gala evening.

International Roma Day Celebration 2022

The festive evening marking International Roma Day returns after a two-year hiatus. The theme of this year’s – the eighth – edition in 2022 is Baripen / Pride, because despite difficult times in the past and present, we have much to be proud of. In the cultural and social programme at the Archa Theatre, Prague, visitors can look forward to performances by Ida Kelarova and Desider Dužda, Ondra Gizman Sr., Natalia Kuchárová, Sara Kaliášová, Ivan Herák, Veronika Kačová and Richard Adam. The artists will be accompanied by the Live Band of Milan Krok. Visual projections during the gala evening will be realized by Lukáš Matejka (TRAKT).

Earth: from traditional art to new media

The interdisciplinary project Earth builds on the interaction of several artistic fields. It is based on Ivana Mer’s album “Earth” (which was nominated for the Radio Head Awards as the album of the year in the world music folk category) and develops it further. Visual artist Mária Júdová created stunning video projections, artist Katarína Caková created a special scenography, the hand-woven costume is from the workshop of Daniela Danielis WNOOZOW, and the choreographer Soňa Ferienčíková took care of the movement preparation. The blurred boundaries between the genres thus become even more fluid, so that the viewer is carried away by the current into the surprising and remote corners of a unique musical and visual universe.

Focusing on the changes we are going through as humanity, but also about the deep essences we have in common as humanity, this interdisciplinary project aims to to pass on the call of the Earth for change and for a more conscious approach to it as well as to ourselves. Project is an ode to nature, the call for empathy, and a change in our behavior.

We celebrated International Earth Day with this unique interdisciplinary performance, which also featured special guests- including violinist and singer Nina Rosa, percussionist Miloš Vacík and musician Bára Zmeková.

I am Roma

Population and Housing Census 2021 in Slovakia is based on a new concept. For the first time in Slovakia´s history, the way the data will be collected has changed. Instead of traditional self-enumeration method, an integrated census will take place which, from the point of view of the methods used, represents a combined way of collecting the data. Integrated census combines the data from administrative data sources and the data from field enumeration. Administrative data sources are the databases under the administration of ministries or other government departments (Register of natural persons under the administration of Ministry of Interior of the Slovak Republic). Integrated census, as a method of obtaining data, is viewed around the world as a certain bridge from the traditional census to a fully integrated census. Population and Housing Census 2021 is modern and fully electronical. It will be implemented in two rounds – housing census and population census.

A special animated videospot for Roma speaking population was created by Lukáš Matejka/TRAKT (animation), Marián Balog (voice), Dávid Tišer (text).

And that is the reason why I am going to register with the Roma nationality at the population census between the 15^th and 31^st March.

International Roma Day Celebration 2019

The highlight of the International Roma Day Celebration is the gala evening at the ARCHA Theatre in Prague, which takes place on April 8th. Its main focus is a music program that is adapted or arranged in such a way that the audience can see and hear more than they are used to during the ordinary concert productions of the individual performers. Unexpected duets, author arrangements of famous songs, surprising artistic connections, interesting guests. All this has become standard of the gala celebrations over the past four years, and this year it will not be different.

In 2019, during the gala evening, there were performing for example: Marco Pillo, Helena Zeťová, Gejza Horváth, Erika Nováková, Filip Gondolán, Rita Beňáková, Ondřej Ferko and others. The Vjing visual projection was realized by Lukáš Matejka (TRAKT).

The gala evening with a rich and unique music program (April 8, 2018) is the culmination of the four-day celebration of this Roma feast organized by Ara Art. During the evening, the audience could see and listen to artists: Antonín Gondolán, Martina Balážová, Anna Slováčková, Milan Kroku and his live band and many other Roma and non-Roma singers, musicians and other guests. The theme of this year’s 4th celebration is Romipen / Rome, a set of Romani cultural traditions and values and their content in today’s modern times. The digital projection of the Galaprogram, which took place at the Archa Theater in Prague, was attended by Lukáš Matejka (TRAKT). International Roma Day

The 3rd annual celebration of the International Roma Day in Prague was carried out in the spirit of the motto MEAT TOTAL. The rich program lasted for more days. It started on Wednesday, April 5, 2017, and the MDR peak was scheduled for the gala evening on April 8, 2017 at the LaFabrik Theater with a rich and original music program. Throughout the evening, VJ projections were conducted by Lukáš Matejka (TRAKT). In addition, on April 7, TRAKT also prepared an interactive projection on the glass facade of the New Stage – Piazzetta of the National Theater in Prague. Viewers could try Digital Graffiti and leave a temporary digital link to the International Day of Roma.

The Last Anniversary show

Project Hopes and Memories after two years meets an accomplishment and comes to his final. The result of our intensive international cooperation is contemporary-ballet-opera performance The Last Anniversary, which /after hard preparation period/ premiered on November 7th in Bakelite Multi Art Center in Budapest. After very successful show in Hungary performance embarked on the European tour with the next a stop right here in Slovak republic. Under control of Lukas Matejka and Pavol Soukal who lead 3D visual part of the performance and together with others 20- international members a crew has prepared for Bratislava A4 space an ultimate adventure.

As a final stop performance was played at the Prague Studio hrdinu on 13th November, where for TRAKT Michaela Bottková took over the leadership. One week later she travelled for a two-week-long South African tour. For an amazing audience in Durban Stable theatre there were played two shows and to complete conclusion of The Last Anniversary Tour, they head in Johannesburg, South Africa’s most populous city. In the Market Theatre our team played five great performances, welcomely visited by local and national television, Ambassadors of the project countries and especially incredibly vibrant domestic audience. Nomads land Praha

TRAKT (SK) and Mamapapa (CZ) took part in the December residence “Nomads Land” in Prague. The area of DIVUS SPACE was for artists the base and working studio, from where they had realized field studies of the locations. Task of the artists Tomas Žižka, Michaela Bottková and Lukas Matejka was to create beam art projections in Prague public space. Designed visuals artists represent as a direct reactions to memory of events in January 1969, around the personality of Jan Palach. With research issues actively helped Ondrej Šulc and project coordinator Michal Somoš. For documentation of the project was involved Dominik Žižka. The project (sub-realization) is part of multimedia opera Hopes & Memories and in 2013 was supported by Visegrad Fund.
