On 18. – 21. August the project “Hapto – Singing – Playing Plants” was introduced by its author Filip Kmeť from art group TRAKT on exhibition Agrokomplex 2016 Nitra. Plants got “alive” by human touch while playing prepared sounds, which brought smiles to a lot of faces. The project also connecting an audience with pleasure feelings – by touching a living grass by bare feet and by plants by hand. This creates an electrical impulse which allows participants to create a simple melody.

The exhibition project called Seven Touches offers confronting works of young artists whose common denominator is to draw attention to the human senses – their imperfection, frailty, and an attempt to verify their ability to reliably transmit information. The wide range of media (text from conceptual tuned installation audio and video installation) so communication takes place in the underground area, so in comparison to impersonal gallery framework provides a platform cramped and uncertainty stronger tone of the works. On the one hand, questioning calculated to occur logical thinking and handling audience expectations, on the other hand it is a subjectively defined relationship to space, time, or the imitation of the attributes of living biological structure underground.

From the ironic horror found footage, which also expands into the expansive environment, thus drastically mess up the line between film and reality, through the intervention facing an entry chamber and the presence of a person in an unfamiliar environment, to the deceptively guided by assumptions and stereotypes of perception, parasitizing the viewer doubt extends line between the individual works. This nexus is a form of navigation, topographic map of sensory perception, which is the essence of an opinion to learn understanding the relationships, an attempt to define a new orientation and sensory examination of the limits of reality. Seven Touches reviews the viewers’ expectations and pushes them to be a line beyond which to see is not to believe.

The connection of the word „ochutnávka“ („taste“) and letter „V“ in the title of the exhibition suggest wine tasting, to which is all concept based. Classic wine tasting become art peace. Also work react very strightly on process of openings of art shows and elitism in the art.

Why do people go to the opening? Vernisage means festive opening of the exhibition. The word is associated with art show and refection. Visitors hear curator speach, they discuss between each other with pleasure and then they observe refection. The exhibition and art falls into the background. Why tasting of wines could not be art itself?

„Ochutnávka V“ is based on short event. Classic wine tasting – wine evaluation opened for public. Event is appropriated by degustation – wine tasting as artistic activity. Staged occasion reconstructed live tasting in real time and space, in direct interaction with visitors. Happening „Ochutnávka“ become opportunity for discussion, improvisation and unpredictable. It is up to the spectator himself how to judge the work which escape all conventions of galleries.

The art show is critique of elitism in art. Simultaneously it is reflection of society focused on shallow values. The whole event will run as general wine tasting event – tasters and visitors become part of the work. They will taste five tastes of wine. We are focused on laymans. Taste of wine will be the most expected sensorial atribute. Layman , in contrast with Professional wine taster, may just state „ I like“ or „ I do not like“ at the moment.

Record of the happening will screen documentation of evening for spectators in future visit. Everything what was part of happening should remain in place as visitors – tasters left. But hard – working cleaners of Nitra Gallery took care of opposite.

There is a process that leads to the origin of an artwork. Mostly it is called the process of creation. It is the activity performed by an artist and it leads to the goal, an artwork. The process of creation is inherently comprised in any artwork, the exhibition In Process, however, attempts to distinguish the creation and its result. Many artists often recollect that the road to the goal and the origin of their artwork are more important than the artwork itself. The exhibition In Process is guided by this idea. It maps the process of an artwork creation, to put it bluntly, it situates unfinished artworks outside of artists’ studios and inserts them in the premises of the Nitra Gallery. The space of the Youth Gallery in Nitra is an ideal place for the concept. The aim of the exhibition is to link the artworks in progress of all participating artists as if they were in the working environment.

The concept of the exhibition In Process highlights origins of the artworks and attracts the spectators’ attention to the process of creation. The result of the creative process is insignificant and hidden; the artwork is the process itself. The form of presentation needs to be tangible, able to be presented not only verbally or in a written form but also in pictures. The exhibition contains photographs, videos, objects, artifacts, and comments selected by the artists. It documents and records the process of the artwork creation. The selection addresses the viewers both visually and in its content. As it often happens, the documentation of the process of origin remains undisclosed therefore a number of very interesting creative processes last only as legends. The viewers at exhibitions mostly focus on the results of creation – artworks (artifacts) presented in a “polished”, artistic form. The recordings of what later became the artwork, however, are often raw. The creation process, if documented, is recorded roughly, simply, but authentically. The recordings sometimes happen accidentally.

The exhibition, however, makes visible different approaches that the artists have already during the process of creation. The origin of some artworks is deliberately recorded; some of them are recorded in progress and with disruptions. The percipients cannot see any representative artwork at the exhibition, the fact that can be confusing for a layperson. At the same time this approach encourages the viewers to search for results that have been created (the accomplished artworks) or as a case may be are only being created. This situation opens up a possibility to “see through” visual arts that eventually, when dismantled, become more accessible, and playful.

The exhibition In Process displays works and installations of fresh graduates from the Faculty of Visual Arts, Academy of Arts in Banská Bystrica, and current students of the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava, and even the Faculty of Dramatic Arts at the Academy of Arts in Banská Bystrica. The curatorial project aims to connect the artworks created in traditional forms such as painting with new digital technologies such as video or documentary film. The final result is therefore an intermedia experiment, similar to the approach of the artists’ individual practices.
